Ulster Societies’ Conference
(By ZALIA THOMAS) LONDON. Ulster men and women from all over Great Britain will gather in Glasgow early in September for the annual conference of the Confederation of Ulster Societies. Among those attendin; will be two New Zealanders Mrs B. McMeekin, from th<
Wanganui Ulster Society, and Mr J. B. Brotherston, president of the New Zealand Federation of Ulster Societies. There are 34 Ulster societies in England, Scotland and Wales, in centres like Manchester, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The biggest society, in numbers, is the London one. Each year the conference is held at a different centre, at the invitation of the local ! Ulster society. This year’s , conference is the twenty-first, : and it is fitting that the host
for this “coming of age” should be the Glasgow Ulster Association, the oldest member society, founded 85 years ago. The youngest member of the family is the Cambridge Society, which came into being earlier this year. Nearly all the “home” societies will each send two delegates to Glasgow. The president of the Confederation of Ulster Societies is Captain Terence O’Neill, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. This year's chairman of the confederation will be General Sir James Steele, one of Ulster’s distinguished soldiers, who now lives in Somerset. The programme for the conference includes a civic reception by the Lord Provost of Glasgow, a dance, and a luncheon given by the Government of Northern Ireland in honour of the delegates.
