RACING Heavy Track Will Suit Red Crest In Cup

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Heavy rain yesterday upset all early predictions on the Avondale Cup today.

Pell Mell. Roganne and Terrific seemed the best prospects beforehand. The way now seems open for Red Crest. Proud Chief, Midnight Kiss, and Rainfall, each an accomplished mudlark, to share the $7500 stake.

Pell Mell, for all his recent good races, is at his best when the footing is not too heavy. So is Roganne and it is more than probable Terrific will like the going firmer than it will be today. The change in the weather was bad luck because the track dried quickly during a fine mid-week spell and until Thursday afternoon, promised excellent going—quite the best in Auckland since last autumn. It is unlikely now to be other than heavy. Red Crest, Proud Chief and Midnight Kiss were among the best performers at the Wellington winter meeting last July. Proud Chief and Midnight Kiss with wins in the Winter Oats and the Parliamentary Handicap respectively and Red Crest with game second placings in each event. Red Crest has not raced since Trentham. Midnight Kiss has had a couple of sprints, which are well beyond him these days, and Proud Chief has had three starts which brought in a second placing at Ellerslie. Good Condition Red Crest meanwhile gave ample evidence of his good condition when he galloped in a race trial with Terrific and Bright Chief at Ellerslie last Saturday. From 11 furlongs upward, he is one of the best performers and he seems in his element when the going is fairly soft or heavy. Proud Chief revels in the wet Whenever the conditions are his way he can be tough to beat in the best company. He managed a fair eighth last start over a mile and a quarter at Ellerslie and has trained on pleasingly. One of Rainfall’s claims to consideration is her win in the Avondale Cup last year. She has not achieved much meantime, but her good finish for sixth behind Fairscott over a mile at Ellerslie last Saturday looked promising. Roganne is the top-weight with 9-1, Midnight Kiss and i Red Crest (9-0), Pell Meir and Terrific 8-10 are next in the field. Their form today will at-| tract widespread Australian interest Master Brynn, from Foxton,. and Laramie have been racing well in the middle dis-' tricts of the North Island and with the light-weight.
