$38,000 Bequest

A residue of about $38,000 in the estate of William Joseph Francis Barnett will go to the Salvation Army with a request that the money be used to help unmarried mothers, unmarried discharged woman prisoners and spinsters over 72 years of age. who have lived continuously in Sumner or Christchurch for not less than seven years. The bequest would be made after paying legacies, bequests and expenses, said the District Public Trustee (Mr K. H. Readman). Mr Barnett died in Christchurch on June 30. Last Excursion The last excursion train to Arthur’s Pass this year will leave Christchurch on Sunday. Originally only one train was to make the trip, but 500 bookings have filled it and a second train will run. It will leave Christchurch at 8.45 a.m. and Arthur's Pass at 4.20 p.m. The first train will leave Christchurch at 8.20 a.m. and Arthur’s Pass at 4 p.m. Heavy Snowfall Snow was falling heavily at Mount Cook last evening. The Mount Cook National Park chief ranger (Mr D. F. Bell) said that a park board vehicle reached the Hermitage at 7.30 p.m., but it was expected that because of the rapid deterioration in the weather the Pukaki-Hermitage road would be closed until it was cleared by the Ministry of Works this morning.
