Firearms Amnesty
A three-month amnesty for the surrender of illegal and unregistered firearms has been declared by the police to begin on September 1. In this period, unregistered firearms and illegal firearms, such as machine-guns, revolvers and pistols, can be surrendered to police arms offices and police stations without fear of prosecution. In some instances registration of firearms, previously held illegally, will be permitted. Persons holding registered firearms but having changed their address without notifying the police, as required by law, will be able to give the correct address without fear of prosecution. The amnesty will also cover the surrender of explosives, bombs and grenades. The police advise persons wishing to surrender these to be very careful, and recommend persons not to move bombs or grenades; explosive experts will handle these. Several amnesties have been held in recent years. Several hundred firearms were handed into the Christchurch police arms office during the amnesty a little more than two years ago, and altogether 2752 weapons were handed in throughout New Zealand.
