Can Only Stand Aghast—Mr Kirk
(Parliamentary Reporter)
WELLINGTON, August 21. Intervention by force in the affairs of any sovereign State was to be absolutely deplored, said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) tonight. Reports reaching New Zealand, he said, gave rise to the gravest anxiety because of the international tensions they created and the grave crisis which had resulted. “One can only stand aghast !
at the enormity of the action by neighbouring countries of Czechoslovakia. While at this stage one has little more than preliminary reports to go on it is perfectly clear that what is taking place is an, invasion by force, directed at interferring in the domestic affairs of Czechoslovakia.
“Not only is it full of menace in terms of peace, but it is a form of aggression which cannot be too strongly condemned,” said Mr Kirk.
