MACABRE INCIDENT

(N.Z. PA -Reuter—Copyright) SUVA, Aug. 20.

Mourners screamed in terror when a grave rejected a coffin at the Labasa cemetery on Fiji’s second - largest island, Vanua Levu. They had just seen the coffin, containing the body of a 45-year-old cane farmer, lowered into the grave when there was a loud buzzing noise, the soil erupted, and the coffin rose to the surface.

The Director of Geological Surveys (Mr J. C. Grover) said later that an eruption of natural gas caused the incident.

The farmer was reburied in another grave.
