Fairscott Outclasses Milers At Ellerslie

•'The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND.

In his first open race Fairscott won the August Handicap at Ellerslie yesterday every bit as easily as he did when winning his way so impressively through the hack and intermediate classes. After allowing Papeete and Wonderbar to make the pace, he was too strong in the run home, winning by three lengths.

When he dwelt just a little in the gates Fairscott looked as if he would be hard pressed to continue his fine record. But when his rider, A G. Colven, urged him sharply a couple of times he rushed to trail the leaders and was always going well afterwards. Fairscott has now had eight races, all within not much more than 12 months, for five firsts, a second and a third. This latest was his fourth successive win, after successes over six furlongs at Ellerslie, six furlongs at Tauranga and a mile at Te Awamutu. May Not Start Not much more is planned for him until next year. He is an acceptor for the Jellicoe Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday, but it was not certain

yesterday whether he would run. If he does it will probably be his last race for a while. Fairscott is a four-year-old gelding by Fair’s Fair from Rose Marie so he comes from a suc-

cessful family. He is trained at Te Rapa by Mr J. W’. Anderson. a partner in the ownership with Air G. H. Priscott. It was in recognition of

Fairscott s fine promise that Colven returned to riding early last winter. He had given up racing to open a retail business in Cambridge and even yesterday hurried away immediately so as to be home at “closing time.” Pell Mell, from midfield and an awkward position to the straight, ran on for second to shade Papeete and Dr Simon. Roganne. also running on, was fifth. Rainfall was next, then Gay Marilyn.

Fairscott in the T.A.B. double with Red Arrow returned $71.15 and with the runner-up, Kalgoorlie, $19.05. Second Leg Kalgoorlie made a great attempt to lead all the way in the second leg, the Broadway Handicap, but failed only in the last few yards. With 9-7. and in his first race since April 13. it was a fine performance. Red Arrow, a four-year-old from W. J. Bromby’s stable, had been more than a little disappointing. This time he trailed Kalgoorlie and responded gamely under a hard ride to reduce the top-weight s lead in the last 100 yards. Fair Law, the favourite because of his easy win at Matamata last Saturday, finished third after spoiling his chance by a slow start. He made the lost ground fast but had nothing left for the run home. The on-course double, Patsy’s Joy and Angelicum, paid $583.30 for $l. The concession double, Patsy's Joy and Chekaro, was worth $136.35 for $l.
