MEDICAL AID ABROAD
$15,000 Gift Of Drugs
Drugs worth more than $15,000 were sent from Christchurch last week to hospitals and medical organisations in emerging countries. The shipment, the tenth in three years, was made by Medical Aid Abroad, a New Zealand-wide group with headquarters in Christchurch which collects surplus drugs and medical supplies that would otherwise be discarded. Since the group was formed three years ago $65,000 of drugs has been sent to needy countries. Branches have been established in Auckland and Wellington and Dunedin and shipments will soon be made from those centres. For the last 18 months Medical Aid Abroad has stored its drugs in premises provided free by the City Council. But the rooms have to be vacated, as work is to start soon on the town hall site. The chairman of Medical Aid Abroad (Mr K. Heslin) said that new premises would have to be found quickly. Any offers would be considered. i
