LEAVING MONEY
Australian
Artist
An Australian artist, Ruth Faerber, will exhibit paintings and prints in a dealer gallery in Auckland this week —but any money paid by purchasers of her work will have to remain in New Zealand. Mrs Faerber has agreed to leave the money in New Zealand to satisfy a Customs Department restriction on the repatriation of funds earned from the sale of overseas painting and sculpture. The entry of works of art to New Zealand has been controlled by import restrictions since 1958. Some 58 art galleries and museums import works under a pool licence of §58.000. Mr Kees Hos, of the New Vision Gallery, where Mrs Faerbers works will be shown, said the Customs Department was an embarrassment to art lovers. “Australian pop singers, magicians, entertainers, and beauty queens can come to New Zealand and take home considerable sums of our overseas funds,” he said. “But serious artists and sculptors are not allowed this privilege, although our artists are free to exhibit and sell in Australia.”
