Trophy Given To Red Cross

Lady Manning has presented a trophy to the North Canterbury Junior Red Cross, to be awarded annually to the most progressive circle.

Attending her last annual meeting of delegates as Mayoress, Lady Manning yesterday presented the trophy to the Phillipstown Circle; the first winner. It was received by the four delegates, Rukhi Bhana (chairman of the circle), Zena Pegrum, and Lynette and Karen McLintock. In thanking Lady Manning, the Junior Red Cross organiser (Miss T. Eldridge) said it was mote than an ordinary trophy. The trophy would be awarded annually to the circle making the most progress under difficulty, not to the one with the most members or the one which raised the most money, she said. “The Phillipstown Circle is

very symbolic of this trophy. It has risen to great heights from a small beginning,” Miss Eldridge said. The circle had been started about three years ago through the efforts of one standard four pupil, Noela Adams. Before opening the meeting, Lady Manning expressed appreciation of the work being done by Junior Red Cross members. What they were learning now would, more than likely, be the foundation of bigger things in the future, she said. “You have the honour of being members of one of the most humanitarian organisations in the world. May your work be an inspiration to other boys and girls.” The president of the North Canterbury centre (Mrs R. I. Brake) said it was sad that Lady Manning would not be back next year. “I don’t think we have ever had such a wonderful attendance at • delegates’ meeting as the one here today, ft seems that interest in the Junior Red Cross is growing,” Mrs Brake said.
