Schools’ Hockey Begins

Secondary school hockey tournaments began in various centres throughout New Zealand yesterday.

Christchurch Boys’ High School began well in Christchurch in its quest to retain the Rankin Cup when it won its matches at Riccarton High School by large margins. In the best match of the day Pukekohe High School beat Nelson College, 4-3, after trailing by two goals. The defeat of last year’s champion, Ranfurly District High School, by Methven District High School and Linwood High School was the main surprise at the South Island secondary schoolgirls’ tournament at Hospital Corner. Section leaders at the girls’ tournament are Burnside High School, St Margaret’s College, which has played an extra game, Darfleld High School, and Avonside Girls’ High School and Cashmere High School share section C.

The semi-finals and finals will be played tomorrow. At Auckland, Linwood High School, which is defending the India Shield, had a win and a draw.

On a ground inches deep with slush. Linwood found constructive hockey impossible when it drew, 2-all, with Te Awamutu College. B. Beaumont and D. Small scored a goal each.

In the afternoon Linwood beat Mount Albert Grammar, Petheram, and R. Parry scored for Linwood.
