Decision Soon On Oval
The Hagley Park grounds committee later this week will announce what steps it will take to restore Hagley Oval before the opening of the cricket season. The secretary (Mr R. J. B. West) said yesterday that the committee had studied the problem of draining Hagley Oval, which had become a lake since the erection of the Canterbury Cricket Association’s sports centre earlier this year. Its decision would be announced after a meeting later in the week. w t “The actual wicket blocks are in good order,’’ said Mr West. “They have not been affected to any great extent. “Considering the bad winter the wickets have stood up remarkably well.’’ he said. Mr D J. Osborne, of Oamaru. has been appointed the new groundsman for Hagley Oval, and to look after the pitches at Hospital Corner. He replaces Mr A. W. Sheath, who has transferred to the Hantner golf course.
