More Cigarettes
More cigarettes were made in New Zealand in the last seven months than in the same period last year, although less tobacco was produced. The Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Memorial Lecture Sir Ronald Algie, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, will give the W. A. Kennedy Memorial lecture at a meeting sponsored by the Canterbury Mountaineering Club in Christchurch on Wednesday evening. The title of the illustrated address will be “Unrelated Mountaineering Reminiscences.” The annual lecture is in memory of Mr W. A. Kennedy, a pioneer climberexplorer in the South Island. Sir Ronald Algie in his younger days was an accomplished climber. Inadequate Culture A difference between Maori and pakeha cultures was accentuated at the annual conference of the National Council of Churches in Christchurch on Saturday. Mr R. Tirikatene, an elder of the Ratana Church, when presenting greetings from his church to the conference, according to Maori custom, changed to song. “It shows how poverty stricken our pakeha culture is that 1 cannot reply in kind,” said the president of the council (the Rev. W. S. Dawson). Fair Record Attendance at the Industries Fair since it opened on Thursday evening has set a new record. By Saturday evening 20,055 persons had visited the fair, compared with 16,960 at the same time last year. Saturday’s attendance of 13,648 persons was also a new record for the first Saturday of the fair. The previous record of 12,000 persons was set in 1961, the first year the fair was held at Canterbury Court. Last year more than 100,000 persons visited the fair during the two weeks it was open and the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association expects this figure will be passed this year. It is thought more visitors have been atracted by the increased number of working exhibits. Holiday Entertainment Mr R. H. Stillwell is providing school holiday entertainment at his Selwyn Street home. As well as the dolls and mechanical toys which are features of his annual Christmas entertainment, he has a scenic railway and a model of a monorail in his “theatrette.” Fewer Cars Five thousand fewer cars were assembled in New Zealand in the first six months of this year than in the same period last year.
