Burnham Camp Court Martial
Private A. G. Brown, of the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, was sentenced to nine months detention by a district court martial at Burnham Military Camp on Friday. The sentence is subject to confirmation by the convening authority.
Brown was charged with desertion in that he absented himself from the Ist Battalion Depot at Burnham on November 1. 1965. until his arrest in Wellington on July 29 this year.
He was also charged with losing by neglect, clothing and equipment issued to him to a total value of 5123.23. Brown pleaded not guilty to both charges and the court found him not guilty of these
but guilty of being absent without leave.
The prosecuting officer was Second - Lieutenant J. A. Fisher, and the defending officer was Lieutenant T. J. Verrall.
The court consisted of the president. Major K. G. Smart, and the members, Captain J. F. Hargest and Captain N. C. McPherson. The judge advocate was Mr E. J. Somers.
Mr Hendrik van Oss, deputy director of the Office of Central West African Affairs in the United States Department of State, has been appointed deputy chief of mission of the United States Embassy in Wellington.
