Allegation “Unfair”
The statement, published on Saturday, by the secretary of the New Zealand Horseman’s Association (Mr J. C. Bishop, of Christchurch) alleging “star chamber tactics” by the New Zealand Trotting Conference in the matter of charges laid against M. A. Skinner, of Hedgehope, were described as “not only unfair and unwarranted but of little credit to the association” by the president of the conference (Mr A. J. Nicoll, of Ashburton). Mr Nicoll said that the conference bad no powers under the Rules of Trotting to grant Skinner legal representation nt a hearing to be held in Invercargill today.
“The matter of legal representation was entirely over to the tribunal appointed to hear the case,” said Mr Nicoll.
“In rare cases applications for legal representation have been granted. Skinner made a request through his solicitor for legal representation at the hearing 'because of legal interpretation and other matters of law.’ “I understand that the tribunal has refused Skinner’s application for legal representation, but his counsel was invited to make written submissions on questions of law. This he declined to do,” said Mr Nicoll.
