EXTENSION OF BRIDGE
Work Nearing Completion (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 18. With less than three months to go to the expected opening of one side of the Auckland Harbour Bridge extensions, the contractors are entering the final stage of the work on the girders. The last of the 13 girders at the eastern side is scheduled to be erected in about a fortnight, but this may be delayed by the strike of boilermakers employed on the bridge by Price-Norsteel, Ltd.
After this girder has been fitted, the main welding of the eastern extensions should be completed in two or three weeks.
Two lanes of the eastern extensions were expected to be open to traffic early in November. Before this is done the contractors will need to install five new toll booths and do certain approach road works.
