North Canterbury Beats Ellesmere For Shield

North Canterbury narrowly beat Ellesmere, 15-14. In a Rugby fixture for the Southbridge Shield at the Rangiera Show Grounds on Sunday. The match was exciting, not for brilliance of play but for closeness between teams and the constantly changing lead. North Canterbury, which had won the under 20 Munro Shield series for the last 10 seasons, lost 11-13 to Ellesmere Juniors in the curtain-raiser. This match also was close and the outcome was in doubt until the end.

Both senior teams were without their best reguler players, who were required for other representative matches. However, the substitute players all acquitted themselves wen, and provided the large crowd with a bright match In which seven tries were scored. North Canterbury's points were from tries by R. Taylor. N. Henry (two), B. Gardner, and D. Shepherd. For Ellesmere, G. Bennet scored two tries. J. Robinson kteked a field goal, and N. Alexander kicked a penalty and a conversion. In the Munro Shield match, R. Calder and M. Manson scored tries, and R. Mangles kicked a fienalty and two conversions or Ellesmere. p. Lynskey
