BOY ON WALK COLLAPSES

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, August 18. A 15-year-old Venturer scout, Martin Clyma, of Devon Street West, New Plymouth, died in the New Plymouth hospital emergency theatre at 1.45 a.m. today, after he collapsed during a mountain walk.

He was carried unconscious off the 4005 ft Maude Peak, in the Pouakai Range, on the northern fringes of Mount Egmont.

Police said the youth had worn only light clothing and was quickly overcome by the intense cold. Three other members of the tramping party turned back because of the cold. The search controller, Sergeant A. P. Barber, said the party of scouts was tramping from Maude. Road, over the peak, and down to Carrington Road. Police were alerted at 4.5 p.m. when two members of the party arrived at a Maude Road fanner’s house. Another member of the party was left with the collapsed boy.

At 8.35 p.m. the rescue party, having found Martin Clyma, began the long trek out. They had taken numerous hot water bottles, packed in thick blankets, to pack round the youth. Members of the search and rescue team reported that Martin had been on top of the peak, which was almost bare of scrub for hundreds of feet. It then gave way to scrub which became thick bush lower down.
