Martial Law In Spain

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CORUNNA (Spain), Aug. 16. The Spanish Government has reimposed a degree of martial law in its fight to smash Basque nationalists. It has announced that it is bringing back the suspended 1960 decree on banditry and terrorism, imposing military law on “all who conspire or take part in meetings and demonstrations with the aim of causing disturbances of' interior public order, international conflicts -r loss of prestige to the State.” The Information Minister (Mr Manuel Fraga Iribarne) told reporters the decree was aimed at “acts committed by a small group of people against social peace and the unity of Spain.”

Police in the northern Basque province of Guipozcoa are hunting a Basque terrorist organisation which has made armed raids on banks, placed booby traps in cars and dynamited police posts. It is also believed responsible for the assassination of the provincial security police chief.

An explosion and fire today destroyed the home of a pro-Government official in north-eastern Spain, Mr Juan Beguiristain, Mayor of Villa de Lazcano.
