Steam Tram Overhaul
The Canterbury Tramway Company steam tram No. 7, now running on the Tramway Historical Society’s tramway, at Ferrymead will be withdraw for several months when its boiler certificate expires on August 31. The society was granted a Marine Department certificate last September to run the boiler at 1251 b pressure—only 251 b below its original pres-
sure—after many years of disuse. The tram has been, running on most Sundays since the tramway was opened on January 6. The boiler will have a Marine Department hydraulic test to certify that it is safe. Before this the society intends to have all the mechanical parts stripped for overhaul. The Christchurch firm of Andersons, Ltd, has offered to
supply tools free for the work. Employees of the firm will probably help. The society hopes to have No. 7 running again by the end of this year. The tramway will be open for the public tomorrow and on August 25 before the steam tram is withdrawn. The society hopes to provide a service with horse-drawn trams until No. 7 is ready again.
