Badminton titles are enhanced by visitors

'T'HE South Island badminton championships have been enhanced by the entry of several of New Zealand's top players, including the first and second seeds for the national championships, R. H. Purser and J. W. S. Compton. Several North Island players have entered the championships which are being held from August 22 to 24 in the V. R. Skellerup Hall. The national championships will be held in Dunedin from August 27 to August 31. Two juniors, B. Purser (Taranaki) and Miss R. Glenie (Auckland) have been* seeded in the open singles events.

The men’s singles should provide an interesting guide to tlie performance of several Canterbury competitors in the national championships. P. V. Boatwood, the Canterbury champion Is seeded fourth and the runner-up, G. A. Miller is not Boatwood is seeded fourth in the New Zealand championships and Will have to hold his seeding In both championships to stand a chance of selection in the Whyte Trophy team to visit Austjttjia next year. ”

Miller will begin a gruelling month of national and international competition which will end with the youth tour of Australia in September. B. Purser will meet little opposition in the boys' singles but he and Miss Glenie will probably have to compete in five of the six finals, in the junior and open events. There are 19 entries in the men’s singles and the seedings are: R. H. Pursef (Taranaki) 1, Compton

(Wellington) 2, Boatwood 3. B. Purser 4. Three visitors from the North Island have been given the top seedings in the women’s singles. There are 21 entries. The seedings are: Mrs G. Middleberg (Manawatu) 1, Miss Glenie 2, Miss G. Steel (Welling ton) 3, Miss L. Beer (Southland) 4. There are only eight en tries in the boys’ singles. Purser is seeded first and M. Pascoe (Southland) is the second seed. The seedings in the girls’ singles are Miss Glenie 1. Miss J. Skeen (Auckland) 2. Miss G. Hampton (Canterbury) 3, Miss O. Mason (/•almerston North) 4.
