‘Letter Not Sent By National Party’
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. The following statement was made tonight by the National Party: “The address on a letter received by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk), asking for contributions to National Party funds, was not typed by a typewriter in the Canterbury • Westland division office of the party. “The general director of the party, Mr R. F. Wilson, said in Wellington tonight that Inquiries at the party’s
Christchurch office revealed that only two typewriters had been used for typing the addresses at the top of the letters—and both had different type-faces from the one used on the letter received by Mr Kirk.
“The letters had been stencilled and signed—by the divisional treasurer, Mr A. J. Scott—before the addresses were typed in. “Once the addresses had been written in. all were checked before dispatch. “Mr Kirk produced the letter in the House of Representatives on Thursday night. “This afternoon a photograph of the letter—in which the two different type-faces can be easily distinguished—appeared in the ‘Evening Post,’ Wellington."
