Charles On 68 In Richest Tournament

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

HARRISON (New York)

Returning first round scores of 68 yesterday, the New Zealander, R. J. Charles, and the Australians, R. Stanton and B. Crampton, lead the overseas players in the world’s richest golf tournament—the $223,200 Westchester Classic, United Press International reported.

They were four strokes behind the leader, the American, R. Murphy, who had a

magnificent eight-under-par 64. Murphy, a newcomer to the American professional circuit, is one stroke in front of his countryman, D. Sikes. Another American professional, A. Wall, whose game has improved tremendously in the last two weks, held third place at 66, and J. Nicklaus, the defending champion and winner of two tournaments in the last two weks, was next at 67. Enjoying the warm, sunny day and perfect greens, the professionals were near their best as 56 beat par and another 22 equalled it. It appeared that an even-par 144 would be needed to survive the 36-hole cut-off.
