HOSTEL AT ILAM
New Teachers’ College
Planning of a 350-bed multi-storey hostel for students on the new Christchurch Teachers’ College site in Waimairi Road has been authorised by the Government.
This information was given yesterday by the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) to the member of Parliament for Riccarton (Mr M. A. Connelly). The Minister said the total area would be 77.400 sq. ft, designed by the Ministry of Works. In addition to sleeping for 350 students, the hostel will have dining and kitchen space. This hostel will thus be bigger than any of the University of Canterbury halls of residence planned for nearby sites.
The new secondary department of the Teachers’ College, now under construction at Ham, is planned to open in 1970. It is hoped that the new hostel will be started by then.
No announcement has yet been made whether the hostel will be for primary or secondary students or both.
