GAS,NOT WATER

(N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH, August 16. A farmer drilling for water at Kowhitirangi, near Hokitika yesterday, struck a pocket of natural gas. The gas, which was ignited, burned for about half an hour before the bore collapsed. The farmer, Mr N. K. Cook, said today that the drill struck rock at 27ft,

and so he blasted the hole with dynamite. He realised there were pockets of natural gas in the area, and told one of the men with him to throw a lighted match into the bore to see if gas were present. There was. A bright flame blossomed about 2ft above the ground in spite of' the wind.
