WINTER FLIGHT

Hercules To Go South

“Operation Winfly,” the United States Navy’s third winter flight to the Antarctic, is planned for September 3, depending on the weather. Previously the flights have been in June.

The flight will again be made by a ski-equipped Hercules of the Navy’s VX6 Squadron from Quonset Point, Rhode Island. The Hercules for the flight and a supporting Hercules are due to leave their base for Christchurch on August 28. Commander A. J. Toth, the air operations officer on the Antarctic command staff, will be in charge of the flight

The number of American scientists going to McMurdo Station is not yet known; in the past it has not exceeded 12.

The Hercules is expected to remain on the ski-way at Williams Field f qr an hour or two while fresh provisions are unloaded and the aircraft is refuelled.

The scientists are expected to leave the Antarctic within three weeks.

In the past the men taken on the mid-winter flights have been brought out on one of the first flights which goes to open the summer season about October 1.
