Court Martial At Burnham
Private R. K. Piwari, of the Royal New Zealand Afmy Ordnance Corps, was sentenced to 180 days detention by a district court martial at Burnham Military Camp on Tuesday. The sentence is subject to confirmation by the convening authority. Private Piwari was charged with desertion In that he absented himself from the Ist Battalion Depot at Bdrnham on January 12, 1966, until he was apprehended by the police in Wellington on July 12 this year. Private Piwari pleaded not guilty and the charge was changed to one of being , absent without leave.
The prosecuting officer was Second Lieutenant A. R. Hawes, and the defending officer was Lieutenant W. H. Hildreth.
The court / consisted of the president. Major K. G. Smart, and the members Captain J. F. Hargest and Captain R. J. Martin. The Judge Advocate was Major G. C. C. Sandston.
