Temporary Licences

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. All district transport licensing authorities have agreed to the issue of temporary goods service licences to allow road carriers who operate bulk tonnage contracts with railways- to haul their goods by road. The Deputy Commissioner of Transport (Mr A. J. Edwards) said tonight that the temporary licences would free the road haulage of those goods normally subject to the 40-mile rail restrictions which had been affected by the A.S.R.S. action.

“The railways will not object to the issue of temporary licences for bulk tonnage operators or for carriers working under contract to genuine bulk tonnage operators,” he said. Every effort would be made to keep goods moving for the duration of the dispute to minimise the effects to the public.
