LAW IN DISCARD

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 14. A law under which persons can be made statutorilv liable for the maintenance of grandparents, grandchildren and brothers or sisters is to be dropped because the State has assumed that responsibility.

The Domestic Proceedings Bill, now before Parliament, discards existing provisions for the maintenance of near-reiatives, rarely invoked in modern times.

“They really represent a pre-Welfare State method of looking after the destitute,” declared the Attor-ney-General (Mr Hanan) today.

“The social security system has rendered them superfluous.”
