BRIGHTON CLUBS TAKING HONOURS
Clubs from the New Brighton area are having a magnificent sporting year, in Rugby, soccer, women’s basketball and women’s hockey.
New Brighton won the senior Rugby-championship for the first time on July 27, and last Saturday New Brighton and Technical tied for the senior women’s basketball championship. New Brighton held a twopoint lead before the final
round, but Technical won an exciting match, 24-21, to prevent Brighton repeating its success of last year. When they met earlier this season, New Brighton was the victor. Two other clubs from the area are within striking distance of titles. The New Brighton soccer team has an excellent chance of winning the southern league second division title on goal average. Caversham (Dunedin) leads New Brighton by two points but it has completed its programme. New Brighton has one match to play, against Shirley-Nomads (Christchurch) on August 24. Victory will give Brighton the same number of points as Caversham, and as long as the seasiders do not concede too many goals in the process, it will win the title on goal average.
Another team, Rawhitl, is placed second in the senior women’s hockey championship. Next Saturday it plays the competition leader, Carlton, in the final round.
Victory for Rawhiti would bring the club level bn points with Carlton, and there could be a three-way tie if Harewood. at present equal with Rawhiti, also wins its match.
