FUTURE OF SINGAPORE

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) CANBERRA, Aug. 14. The British Conservative Party leader (Mr Edward Heath) today suggested fivepower use of the giant Singapore naval base, declaring: “Our friends are imploring us to stay.”

Mr Heath said in Canberra that the Singapore Government should lease the base to a consortium consisting of Britain, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. A Tory Government, he said, would resume Britain’s military presence in Asia, and he added that a leasing of the Singapore base to a joint force would be “genuine and practical proof of the determination of these five governments to co-operate in defence.”
