50 HURT AT SOCCER
(N Z.PA.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. The British soccer season had a violent start on Saturday when 50 people were injured during the Scottish League Cup match between arch Glasgow rivals, Rangers and Celtic, at Ibrox Stadium.
Hundreds of spectators spilled on to the track under a hail of bottles and cans and police made 38 arrests. Eight of the casualties had to have hospital treatment. An all-ticket 80,000 crowd saw Celtic take a step towards winning the cup for the fourth consecutive year with a 2-0 victory over Rangers. In contrast, there was no trouble at either of the two prominent English first division clashes between Liverpool and Manchester City and Manchester United and Everton. The reigning champion, Manchester City, was beaten 2-1, by Liverpool, but United prevented a Merseyside double by beating Everton, 2-1. The big London local “derby” between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal provided Arsenal with its first win at Tottenham’s ground for 10 years. Queen’s Park Rangers, playing in the first division for the first time, attracted a full-house of 21,500 for their match against Leicester City, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
