Printing Quality

Better printing machine operators and plate-makers should be encouraged to come to New Zealand, said Mr M. J Thompson, of T. J. Edmonds, Ltd, in an address to the Industrial Design Council’s food packaging conference in Christchurch.

Mr Thompson said New Zealand had good printing equipment and designers of world standard, but was “perhaps a little short on technology as regards people.” He said the biggest disadvantage in packaging In New Zealand was that suitable printing surfaces were not available.

“Unfortunately,” he said, “from that mill at Whakatane we are not getting a board of the quality available overseas, and until we do we can’t compete overseas.”

Mr Thompson said he hoped that a new cardboard to be released in October would be an improvement. It was said to have a better coating, and the results of tests seemed quite good. Expense Involved in improved packaging was worth while, said Mr Thompson, because the cost was recouped in the greater volume of sales. In food products particularly, the expense could not be recouped by passing it on to the consumer because of the highly competitive nature of the market
