University System "Among Cheapest”
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Aug. 9.
The New Zealand university system must be one of the cheapest in the world in the amount the Government spent per successful student, said the secretary of the University Grants Committee (Mr R. G. Rowley) today.
The Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon), who had criticised the New Zealand system in comparison with the British university system, did not
have his figures correct, said Mr Rowley. In his statement yesterday, the Minister had said that the British Government got the same number of graduates as New Zealand for half the cost, said Mr Rowley. “That of course is on the assumption that Government grants to the universities are the same in the two countries —but that is not true.” Figures showed that the cost to the Government per successful student in the United Kingdom was twice as high per successful student as in New Zealand. “In Britain the universities are at present expanding rapidly in order to take in a much bigger proportion of the population.”
