Stewart Wins G.P. With Brilliant Drive
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NUERBURGRING (West Germany)
J. Stewart (Britain, Matra Ford) won the European Grand Prix at Nuerburgring with a brilliant drive in thick fog and streaming rain. G. Hill (Britain, Lotus Ford) was second, and J. Rindt (Austria, Repco Brabham) finished third. Stewart, who led from midway through the first lap of the 14-lap, 198-mile race on this toughest of all grand prix circuits, won by more than 4min. Stewart’s win gave him 26 points in the world cham-
pionship table behind G. Hill, whose second place—worth six points—took him to 30 points. J. Ickx (Belgium, Ferrari) was fourth and is now third with 23 points. C. Amon (New Zealand) tried to pass Hill on the dangerous north bend, and flew off the track. He was not injured and walked into the pits. B. McLaren (New Zealand, McLaren Ford), a West German, K. Ahrens (Repco Brabham), and two Britons, J. Oliver (Lotus Ford) and R. Attwood (8.R.M.) suffered the indignity of being lapped by Stewart.
