North v. South Table Tennis NO SURPRISES IN TEAM

(By Our Table Tennis Reporter)

There are no surprises in the South Island table tennis team to play the North Island in Christchurch on the evening of August 24.

The sole selector (Mr P. J. Collett, of Otago) has shown enterprise in choosing Misses G. M. Kemp (Nelson) and C. M. Borck (Marlborough). Both will make their debut and, with Miss Y. M. Fogarty (Otago), who is still a junior, will make this one of the youngest women’s teams to have represented the South Island.

Mrs Y. M. Boulton (Canterbury) has been a consistent performer this season and can be considered unlucky not to have been selected, even as the first reserve. Miss A. J. Eden (Nelson) fills this post. V. N. Brightwell (Canterbury) has deservedly won selection ahead of his strongest rival, G. B. Murphy (Otago) after beating him convincingly at the South Island championships.

Apart from the omission of G. A. J. Frew (Northland) who has not played regularly this season, the North Island team is as expected. The men’s contest could be one of the most open for some years, but the North’s women are a powerful quartet. The teams are:

South Island.—Men: B. A. Foster (Otago, captain), Ling Nan Ming, J. Armstrong, and Brightwell (Canterbury). Women: Misses Fogarty, Kemp, Borck, and Mrs T. May (Canterbury, captain). North Island.—Men: M. W. Borlase (Wellington, A. R. Tomlinson (captain) and G. V. Wilkinson (Auckland), T. J. O'Carroll (Northland). Women: Mrs N. Traill (Northland), Miss D. L. Wade (Bay of Plenty), Mrs C. E. Tadema (Hamilton), and Miss J. E. Brown (Hutt Valley, captain). The North Island selector is Mr R. G. Lea.

Doubles Pairings The doubles pairings are: South Island. —Men: Foster and Brightwell, Ling Nan Ming and Armstrong. Women: Misses Fogarty and Kemp, Miss Borck and Mrs May. North Island. —Men: Tomlinson and Borlase, Wilkinson and O’Carroll. Women: Mrs Traill and Miss Brown, Miss Wade and Mrs Tadema.
