BILLIARDS TITLE

Recovery Ry McConachy (N.Z. Prest Association) AUCKLAND. Rex Williams (England) promised to give the title-hblder. Clark McConachy (New Zealand) a busy week when the challenging Englishman led 975-947 at the end of the first day of the world professional billiards championship in Auckland yesterday. This represented the first four hours of the 24-hour match which will end next Saturday evening. The dapper Williams, aged 35, looked as if he would gain an even bigger lead when the 73-year-old McConachy was below his best form in the first twohour session. Williams led 649286. But in the second session McConachy, returning to something like his best form—and showing a silky touch with nursery cannons—cut the Englishman's lead to 28.
