AID TO BIAFRA
Gifts Through Red Cross Cash cpntributions amounting to more than 2m Swiss francs to aid victims of the war in Biafra had been made by the national Red Cross societies of 29, countries, according to a report received from the International Committe of the Red Cross by the secretary of the North Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society (Mr R. J. Lipscombe). The governments of seven other countries, several international organisations and private individuals had also contributed. About 4.5 m Swiss francs had been received by the the International Committee of the Red Cross and further relief dispatches had been anounced. It was now estimated that there were up to 4.5 m displaced persons in Biafra, of whom 400,000 were being sheltered in improvised reception centres in which rations distributed by the authorities were insufficient to meet the needs, the report said. Fighting was continuing in several areas and the wounded were pouring Into hospitals where medical supplies were running out.
