Hastings Man

Fined $2OO (N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS, July 25. A pie-cart proprietor, Robert Harold Clayton, aged 29, of Hastings, was convicted and fined $2OO when he pleaded guilty this morning to bookmaking. Detective Sergeant R. A. McCrory said that at about 3.35 p.m. yesterday the police visited the Carlton Club Hotel and saw Clayton working as a bookmaker. There was evidence that he had taken $66 in bets on the Levin races. He had $233.12 in his possssion. Mr W. K. L. Dougall, S.M., told Clayton that any subsequent conviction would result in his going tn prison.
