Rhodesians?

" I believe that a very considerable majority of the “ people in New Zealand are sympathetic to “ Rhodesia ”, the Deputy Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) said at the National Party conference in Auckland. "And I believe this is reflected in the attitudes of “ our members of Parliament ”, he added. The late Professor Joad, famous as the leading spirit in the original 8.8. C. “Brains Trust”, had a stock phrase with which he tested questions: “ It all depends upon “ what you mean by . . .” What does Mr Marshall mean by “ Rhodesia ”? Does he mean the population of Rhodesia, estimated in December, 1965, at 4.330,000, consisting of 4,080,000 Africans, 224,000 Europeans, 13,000 Coloureds, and 8100 Asians? Or does he mean the white minority of a few more than 5 per cent of Rhodesians, a minority whose aim is to govern the majority indefinitely? Mr Marshall and the National Party members of Parliament for whom he presumably spoke would be among the first to resent the use of the terms “New Zealand” and " New Zealanders ” in a similarly discriminative way.
