ESTUARY WEED

More Spraying Needed

The spraying of spartina grass in the Estuary had not been as successful as appeared likely earlier, and the grass had made considerable recovery, Mr P. J. McWilliam, the chief engineer, reported to the Christchurch Drainage Board on Tuesday evening. However, it had not been expected that one application would eradicate the grass. Because the grass was covered by the tide, the time available for weedicide to act was limited.

To eradicate it by other than spraying, such as physical removal, would be very expensive and would not guarantee eradication without removal of the root system, which would require excavation and disposal of many tons of sand.

It was proposed to spray again in September or October, Mr McWilliam said.
