Linwood Wins Hockey

In steady rain and on a field which was very heavy, although even and true until it was cut up, Linwood High School beat Nelson College, 4-2, in a hockey match yesterday. Exchanges W’cre very even, both teams playing sensibly and constructively. Their methods and the standards they achieved were a credit to them in such difficult circumstances.

Linwood mhde better use of the less saturated side of the field when its right flank operated in this area, and it passed with more freedom and promptitude. Nelson propped too often with the ball on a surface which made propping wasteful of time, and indulged in too much dribbling. Its methods might have been more productive on a dry ground. For Linwood. B. Bhana at centre-half tackled and intercepted with skill, and fed his forwards well. D. Small was most constructive and unselfish at inside-right, his neat passing making him the best forward

on the field. A. Petheram, on the right-u’ing, often dribbled deeply and made good centre passes, apart from those which were directed to the goalkeeper's pads. B. Beaumont controlled the ball well at centre-forward.

The Nelson centre-half, P. Williams, checked many attacks, and trapped and eluded with considerable success. On the right-wing, N. Hands was most difficult to check because of his close dribbling, but he attempted to beat too many defenders instead of passing. He received good support from W. Griffin, at right-half, and A. Cooke, at centre-forward, was a young player of promise. The inside-left, B. Kerr, was the most constructive member of the attack, producing neat stickwork and distributing the ball capably. Goals were scored for Linwood by Beaumont (2), Small and K. Matthews, and Karr and L. Brown acored for Nelson College.
