Repeat Final In Squash Rackets

Last year’s final will be repeated when J. G. Foulds meets R. M. Garrett in the Christchurch closed squash rackets championships on Friday evening.

Foulds, the first seed, won a gruelling battle with J. H. N. Pine (No. 3), over four games, but Garrett (No. 2) was not fully extended by a below-fonn B. V. Hamilton. Foulds continued his improvement in the tournament, playing an all-court game. Although at times he failed to establish court position with length driving, before playing short volleys or drops, he looked a far more complete player than previously. Pine played well, volleying with control and continually keeping Foulds on the move, and with an ounce of luck he might have taken the third game, which would have given him a 2-1 lead.

Hamilton was out of touch in the first two games against Garrett; everything he tried failed. Garrett kept him under constant pressure, forcing him to try for winners from well back

in the court. In the third. Ham ilton went to 7-1 with fine touch before Garrett lifted his game cut down his errors, and won it. 10-9.

In Division 11, P. C. Angland. the first seed, had too much power for K. W. Victor. Last year’s winner, A. E. Dunlop, lost 10-8 in the fifth game to R. G. Pattinson. after having had six match points. Division I.—Semi-finals: J. G. Foulds beat J. H. N. Pine, 9-5, 2-9, 10-8, 9-6: R. M. Garrett beat B. V. Hamilton. 9-0. 9-3. 10-9.
