Sir,—Biafra seceded after Moslems had indulged in unprovoked massacres of Ibos. “Be Fair” claims that secession was not “Christian” since it led to further avoidable bloodshed. Perhaps Biafrans have not fully lived up to Christian ideals, but does this make them special among people who claim to be Christians? Does this justify Britain's helping Moslems to annihilate them for their sinfulness? Britain's latest rationalisation for her policy is that she never refuses to sell arms to a Commonwealth country. Does this mean that, if in power at the time of the partition of India, this British Government would have given the Moslems of Pakistan weapons to wipe out even more of the Hindus if they had, as Commonwealth members, asked for them? As for “Be Fair’s” justifying “atrocities” with the generalisation, is always horrible,” this shockingly nihilistic argument is a symptom of our civilisation’s decline.—Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. July 21, 1968.
