Results:— Carlton 1, Harewood •« Rawhltl 4, Dlgbys L University 1, Burnside E. Aranul fl, Teachers* College 0. Points: Carlton 10, Harewood 8, Rawhiti 8, Aranui 6j, University 6, Dlgbys 4>, Burnside i, Teachers* College i. Carlton v. Harewood Credit must got to Harewood which was without the services of L. Rutledge, J. Capstick and P. Walker, but held Carlton to the narrow margin of one goal. The first half was even but Carlton’s experience and teamwork gave it the edge in the second half. Increased concentration on crisper passing also contributed to Carlton’s win. For Carlton, G. Phillips at centre-forward played with thrust and determination. A. Howman, at right-inner, displayed aggression and D. Eddy made forceful breaks on the wing. Both backs, L. Drummond and M. Bruhns covered soundly and in the second half gave valuable support to the attack. Harewood’s backs, J. Poulsen and K. Wilkinson, covered quickly and their tackling was decisive. M. Poulsen at left-half trapped well. L. Baylis and S. Turner provided much of the thrust in Hare wood’s attacks. G. Phillips scored the only goal. Rawhltl v. Dlgbys After an even first half, Rawhiti gained the upper hand
with forceful attacking hockey. Both teams had difficulty in trapping because of the bumpy ground, but in the second half Rawhiti had greater success in controlling the ball and this gave it victory. Rawhiti’s forwards, led by H. Walker, were able to concentrate play on the right flank, pressing Dlgbys* defence. The half-line, J. Bellamey, A. Rouse, and H. Warren, covered quickly on defence. Dlgbys could not master the conditions, and the defence was too often caught with the ball on its wrong side. B. Turbott was forceful on the right wing. On defence, D. Quinn and D. McKinnell anticipated well. Rawhiti’s goals were scored by H. Walker (2), N. Mots, and J. Watson. M. Morris scored Digby’s goal. University v. Burnside Although bustled at times by Burnside's determined play, University deserved its narrow win because of its superior combination in the second half. A. McKenna was sound at centre-half. The tackling of L. McAllister and P. McMorran was well-timed, but too often Burnside was able to make considerable ground because of faulty trapping by University’s defence. K. MacDonald gave a fine display at right-inner setting up play for her forwards by thoughtful, constructive passes. J. Timms and J. Wells played with determination. Burnside’s forwards had more success than their defence and they were quick to capitalise on chances. . On defence G. Falloon and V. Miller passed well, but slow covering and faulty trapping were major faults. J. Wells scorqd University’s goal. Aranui v. Teachers* College Aranui was tbo strong for Teachers’ College, and the teams’ hard hitting and speed to the ball enabled it to maintain constant pressure on the College defence. ‘ J. Dann and S. Cowleg backtackled effectively and their quick breaks provided most of Aranui’s thrust. F. Thompson made dangerous runs on the right. On defence A. Ruston’s close support of her forwards on attack was a feature of her game. F. Musson’s trapping and tackling were sound. Although College had chances on attack, difficulty in coping with the conditions was its main problem. J. Stanford made determined runs at right-inner and M. Causen was responsible for effective switches of play to the right flank. J. Fright and P. Hulme tackled well. G. Nelson made good saves in goal. Aranui’s goals were scored by S. Cowles (3), J jt Dann and A. Ruston.
