RACING Trainer’s Strong Hand In Steeplechase

If Ettrick and Seven Veils come up to expectations at Washdyke today, W. J. Hillis will have strong prospects of saddling the winner and runner-up in the Teschemaker Steeplechase.

The Invercargill stablemates will form a formidable bracket for Mr W. E. Haslett in the smallest field on the card and the main race for jumoers at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s annual meeting.

Ettrick, which will be ridden bv his trainer, came right into favour for today's race after a dashing display In a schooling run over the trial steeplechase country at Riccarion on Thursday. Besides that good effort, he has winning form close up on his record as a recommendation. Two starts back he was successful over country at Rotorua. Seven Veils will also be trving to improve a very sound record. This Rawalpindi II mare was successful in the Te Waimate Steeplechase last Monday. That was her second successive victory. The other was over the Washdyke country earlier this month. Waimate form will have also proved valuable if Istan Light, Kai Bank and Lord Fair, which finished second, third and fourth in that order behind Seven Veils, get into the finish. Problem Horse Lord Fair is the problem horse in today's field. Although his Waimate placing was better than anything else he has done on his present campaign it did not indicate that he was close to his very good form of last winter. However, he should still be improved by recent racing and one of his peak runs would be adequate to give him victory. Lambano and Imperial Jest add to the form puzzle. These two were the principals in the finish of the Dromore Steeples at Ashburton last month. Meantime, Lambano has added two minor placings to his record but Imperial Jest has not raced since. Other events for jumpers on today’s seven-race programme are the Pareora Steeplechase and the Hadlow Hurdles. The former event, in which amateurs will do the riding, could be another tussle for honours between Dry Time and Neilson now that Tara Hill has dropped out of the field. These two were the principals in the finish of the corresponding event at Waimate last Monday. Gilt Light could improve the good record of Hazlettowned horses with a victory in the Hadlow Hurdles but Sierra Gold, Running Scared and Sir Athol, last year’s winner, could offer stiff opposition. Watallan and Llanston will be a popular combination for the T.A.B. double, which will be run on the Claremont Handicap and the Levels Hack Handicap. There will be an on-course concession double on the Gleniti Stakes and the Pentlow Hack Handicap. Coeur De

Chene and Ccmprato could be the successful combination. Although the weather has cleared and there has been some drying the track will be soft Fields are:— FIRST LEG OF ON-COURSE DOUBLE
