EMPIRE MEDAL CEREMONY
Miss Plata Heni Park, a former deaconess of the Church of England, received the British Empire Medal (civil division) from the Governor-General (Sir Arthur Porritt) yesterday.
The award was announced in the New Year’s Honours list early this year. Sir Arthur Porritt visited Miss Park at St George’s Hospital to make the award. The brief ceremony was attended by several of Miss Park’s relatives. The citation said the award was for Miss Park’s services to education as a schoolteacher in a State school, and subsequently for her work from 1926 to 1951 as a deaconess in the Church of England in Christchurch. During this time she inltl-
ated new teaching and training methods in 13 Sunday schools, and started counselling programmes among young women, new healing mission programmes, and visits to hospitals and institutions. “At all times her work has been an inspiration to a large number of social and church workers,” the citation read.
