FILLING OF LAKE

Work Goes Smoothly

(N.Z. Press Association)' DUNEDIN, July 21. The first stage of the filling of Lake Aviemore went smoothly this morning when the bottom section of the heavy steel bulkheads to seal off the diversion tunnel was slipped into position. The water level rose rapidly against the upstream dam face to about 20ft before reaching the sluice gates built into the bottom of the concrete dam, and stabilising. Icicles several inches long were hanging from sections of the dam where water was running when the 20-odd workmen started at 8 a.m. today. But' temperatures rose during the morning. Aviemore has the largest concrete dam in New Zealand and, together with its earth wing, has taken six years to build.
