EX-KIWIS BEAT MAORIS, 25-19

The Ex-Kiwii regained the lead on three occasion! to beat the Canterbury Maoris Rugby league team. 25-19, in an attractive game at Murphy Bark, Kaiapoi, yesterday. The match was highlighted by several excellent tries, the three scored by the Maoris having been initiated in their own territory. A fine break by R. F. Schwass sent P. Taihui over, J. M. Toki ran 60 yards to touch down after he had joined the back-line from the blind-side wing and beaten S. Dunn and P. J. Creedy. and C. R. Schwass scored after inter-passing with Toki for more than 50 yards. It was the Ex-Kiwis, however, who showed the greater appreciation of possession. Seldom was a player caught without several of his team-mates being in support. The constant back-ing-up and deceptive running caught the Maoris on the wrong foot and led to most of the ExKiwis’ five tries. G. H. Clarke scored three by being in position to take the final pass. His own attacking

play was also very good, sending players through gaps after drawing the defence. J. A. Bond, until a recurrence of his knee injury forced him to retire in the second half. A. N. Amer and J. M. Bray also impressed on attack while Creedy was an unobtrusive and useful full-back. The experience of J. E. Bond, K. C. Pearee and G. H. Turner and the strength of their running worried the Maori forwards. although Talnui matched any of the Ex-Kiwis in possession. TokL C. R. Schwass and B. L. Williams were the most elusive Maori backs, while L. Tehuia recovered many loose balls In the face of the ExKiwis' players. Clarke (three). Dunn and Amer scored tries for Ex-Kiwis and I. T. Drayton kicked four goals and a field goal. J. C. Hawthorne kicked five goals for the Maoris, whose tries were scored by C. R. Schwass, Talnui and Toki. Referee: Mr K. Carter.
