WAITANGI DAY

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 19. Waitangi Day should be observed on the Sunday nearest to February 6, the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Hanan) suggested today. The next day would then become a public holiday replacing the Anniversary Day holiday which is observed on different dates by various provinces. Mr Hanan, who was addressing the National Party’s Maori Advisory and Organisation Committee, asked: “What is Waitangi Day? We find religious organisations dominating the scene so would it be possible to Sundayise it?” The Maori people should consider what they would gain from such a move which would allow the whole of New Zealand to share the observance of Waitangi Day, he said.
